Central device that conditions and distributes air. Contains blower, coils, filters, and sometimes heating elements. Central to VRF/chiller installations.
Amount of heat required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by 1 °F. The standard unit of cooling/heating capacity on AC and water-heater nameplates. 1 BTU/hr ≈ 0.293 W.
Rate of heat transfer. A typical 1-ton residential AC is ~12,000 BTU/hr. Window and split ACs in Kuwait are commonly sold by BTU/hr rating (9k, 12k, 18k, 24k).
Volumetric airflow unit. 1 CFM ≈ 0.472 L/s. Used on AC nameplates and air-handling specs.
COP
Coefficient of Performance
Dimensionless efficiency of a heat pump or refrigerator — useful heat or cooling delivered divided by work input. COP = EER / 3.412.
EER
Energy Efficiency Ratio
Cooling output (BTU/hr) divided by electrical input (W) at a single rating point. Higher is better. Used on window and split ACs; the base metric Kuwait MEW labels reference.
Terminal device with a fan and heat-exchanger coil that conditions air in a single zone. Chilled-water FCUs are common in Kuwait's high-rise residential.
HVAC
Heating, Ventilation & Air Conditioning
Umbrella term for indoor climate-control systems. The Al Hasawi cooling + heating lines (ACs, central AC, water heaters) fall under HVAC.
SEER
Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio
Cooling output over an entire cooling season divided by total energy input. More representative than EER for real-world operation. US DOE mandates SEER2 ≥ 14.3 for new split AC.
The cooling capacity equivalent to melting 1 short ton of ice in 24 hours. 1 TR = 12,000 BTU/hr ≈ 3.517 kW. Used for commercial chillers, cold rooms, and central AC.
VRF
Variable Refrigerant Flow
Multi-split system where one outdoor unit feeds multiple indoor units and modulates refrigerant flow per zone. Dominant commercial AC architecture above 5 TR.
VRV
Variable Refrigerant Volume
Daikin's trademarked term for VRF. Functionally equivalent; listed because field intel often uses both interchangeably.
